In this case, we photographed “masa”.
“Masa” is a wide bamboo strips divided into sections.
By splitting the bamboo, the thickness is greater than the width, allowing the bamboo to be bent with the outer skin of the bamboo facing upward.
Masa is often used to fill the gap between the rim and the weave, which not only looks beautiful, but also makes the basket stronger and more solid as each part adheres to each other.
This time, the piece is a 20 mm wide, 3 mm thick bamboo strips divided into 32 pieces, with a width of approximately 0.6 to 0.7 mm after division. By processing without going against the fibers, the hard bamboo is transformed into a flexible part.

竹工芸には様々な部材があります。
作るものや使う部位など、それぞれの特性に合わせて部材を取り、編んで行きます。
今回は柾を撮影しました。
柾とは、幅のある竹を分割した部材のことです。
分割することで幅よりも厚みが大きくなり、竹の表皮が上向きのまま曲げることが可能になります。
これらは縁と編み生地の隙間を埋めるためによく使われており、見た目の美しさはもちろん、それぞれの部材と密着させることで強度も上がり、しっかりした籠に仕上がります。
今回の柾は、幅20㎜、厚さ3㎜のヒゴを32分割したもので、分割後の幅は約0.6～0.7㎜になっています。
竹は繊維に逆らわずに加工することで、硬い竹から、しなやかな部材へと変化するのです。
