Bamboo crafts involve several processes, the basic of which is making bamboo strips.
It is said that it takes three years to make the beautiful bamboo strips, so experience is the key to this skill.
This time, we focused on the “urasuki” technique, and photographed “urasuki” bamboo strips using a “sukisen” blade that can adjust the thickness to 1/100 mm.
“Urasuki” using a blade called “sukisen” is an indispensable process when you want to make delicate bamboo strips, and in the video, it is finished to a thickness of 0.4 to 0.5 mm.
There is also a trick to how the backs of the joints are plowed, which can be clearly seen when the bamboo strips are viewed from the side. If the thickness is uniform, a beautiful circle will be formed.

竹工芸にはいくつかの工程があり、その基本となるのが「竹ヒゴづくり」です。
「ヒゴ取り３年」と言われる程、経験がものをいう技術でもあります。
今回はヒゴ取りの中でも「うらすき」という技術をとりあげました。
「うらすき」とは、ヒゴ取りの技術の一つで、「すき銑」や「竹割包丁」などの刃物を使い、竹の内側を削り厚みを均等に揃える技です。
動画は、1/100㎜の厚みを調整できる、「すき銑」という刃物を使い「うらすき」をする様子です。
すき銑を使った「うらすき」は、繊細なヒゴを作りたい時には欠かせない工程であり、動画では厚さ0.4～0.5㎜に仕上げています。
なお、節裏のすき方にもコツがあり、ヒゴを横から見るとその仕上がりがよくわかります。均等な厚みでとれたヒゴは、丸めるときれいな円になるのです。
